Wrestling Jags take second at NCS Duals meet

Windsor gunning for top effort at NBL Championships on Feb. 18

The five-time North Coast Section Duals champion Jaguars saw their winning streak snapped on Saturday at Lower Lake, falling to archrival Ukiah, 39-37 in the finals to settle for second place.

The Jaguars began the tournament as the number three seed, easily dispatching Lower Lake (53-22) and Eureka (47-24) before meeting the Wildcats. It was the second straight year the teams had met in the finals, with the Jaguars posting a 38-29 win last year.

Windsor closed out the league regular season schedule on Feb. 8 against visiting Cardinal Newman, claiming a 52-20 victory.

The Jaguars (6-1) will enter the NBL Championships this Saturday, Feb. 18 (at Maria Carrillo, 9 a.m.) in second place behind unbeaten Ukiah (7-0), but can forge at least a share of the title by finishing ahead of the Wildcats.

The top three individual finishers in each weight class at the NBL meet will advance to the North Coast Section Championships at James Logan High School on Feb. 24-25. A top three finish at NCS will mean a coveted trip to the CIF State meet set for Mar. 3-4 at Rabobank Area in Bakersfield.

Medrano headed to State Championships

The NBL champion Lady Jaguars turned in a great showing at the North Coast Section Tournament in Albany on Feb. 10-11, with three wrestlers bringing home medals.

Leading the charge was Yulisa Medrano, who navigated the 143-pound weight bracket unscathed to capture a first place medal. Medrano will represent Windsor at the CIF Girls State Wrestling Championships in Visalia on Feb. 24-25.

Also turning in outstanding NCS efforts were 116-pound Andrea Rocha (4th place) and 170-pound Azucena Montesinos (8th place). The Lady Jags placed 11th overall out of 57 participating schools.
