Windsor captures six individual titles, qualifies 10 to NCS
The Windsor High School boys wrestling team had a day to remember at the annual North Bay League Championship Tournament hosted by Maria Carrillo on Saturday, an all-day competition that decided both team and individual titles.
The Jaguars entered the tournament needing to finish ahead of Ukiah to forge a share of its sixth straight league title, but fell just short with 213 team points to the Wildcats’ winning total of 237.5. Rounding out the team standings were Maria Carrillo (149), Cardinal Newman (137.5), Casa Grande (112), Santa Rosa (61), Rancho Cotate (31) and Montgomery (20).
“Overall, I was really happy with how our kids wrestled in the championships and consolation brackets,” Jags veteran coach Rich Carnation said. “If we would have gotten a couple of more breaks we might have made a run at Ukiah.”
The objective for most participants was a top-three finish in their respective weight division, good for advancement to the North Coast Section Championships on Feb. 24-25 at James Logan High School in Union City. A top-three finish at NCS will mean a ticket to the prestigious CIF State Championships in Bakersfield on Mar. 3-4.
In all, Windsor crowned six individual champions on Saturday and qualified 10 athletes to the NCS meet.
Capturing individual league titles were 134-pound sophomore Brennan Brown, 142-pound freshman Trent Silva, 147-pound senior Luke Au-Yeung, 154-pound junior Perez D. Perez, 162-pound senior Steven Allee and 197-pound senior Aiden Henry.
Garnering second-place medals were 108-pound Brennan Tamayo and 220-pound Kevin Correa, while 122-pound Connor Brown (3rd place) and heavyweight Austin Jacobs (3rd place) also qualified for the NCS meet.
In addition, 115-pound Tony Russotti (injury default), 128-pound Brandon Fong, 172-pound Josh Wagner and 184-pound Oscar Mayorga did not place.
Girls forge co-championship
Saturday also marked an historic day for the WHS girls wrestling team, which entered the meet just ahead of second place Ukiah and needed no worse than a second place tourney finish to secure a share of the NBL title. The Lady Jags did just that with a team score of 118, just behind the Wildcats with 125. The result gives both teams a co-championship. Rounding out the team scoring were Santa Rosa (54), Rancho Cotate (23), Montgomery (18), Maria Carrillo (14), Casa Grande (0) and Cardinal Newman (0).
Individual league champions for Windsor are 101-pound Whitney Lucchesi, 116-pound Andrea Rocha, 126-pound Adriana Espinosa, 143-pound Yulisa Medrano, 170-pound Azucena Montesinos and 189-pound Danitza Garcia.
