A Geyserville man was arrested on Oct. 30 after authorities say
he hit and killed a woman while driving the wrong way on Highway
101 through Healdsburg. Jose Botello-Soto, 26, faces felony charges
of drunk driving causing death and driving on the wrong side of the
freeway causing death, as well as additional charges of driving
unlicensed and without insurance.
Crystal Carrillo-Martinez, 26, was pronounced dead at the scene
after the head-on collision. The Cloverdale woman reportedly was
driving to Santa Rosa to attend a Halloween party.
California Highway Patrol investigators believe Botello-Soto
headed north on southbound Highway 101 by mistaking the Old Redwood
Highway southbound off-ramp as an on-ramp. “He just got on the
wrong way,” said CHP spokesman John Sloat. “He almost immediately
hit the victim head-on. There’s evidence he tried to avoid her and
couldn’t.”
Botello-Soto was later arrested and charged with drunk driving.
Investigators are waiting for lab tests to determine his blood
alcohol content, but Sloat said he showed signs of
intoxication.
