Windsor teen Anthony Campos died Tuesday morning after suffering
severe head injuries in a Saturday night crash at Starr Road and
Reiman Lane. The 15-year-old was riding in a pickup truck that was
fleeing from police.
Two boys had apparently gone on a joy ride in a 1978 Chevy
pickup truck owned by the driver’s uncle. The driver’s parents were
not home at the time he took the truck.
The chase began about 9:30 Saturday night when the pickup ran a
stop sign at Gemini and Bingelli drives, nearly hitting an oncoming
Windsor Police car. The pickup’s driver sped onto Robbie Way, and
then onto Starr Road, heading south.
The officer turned around but he later said that, by the time he
got to Starr Road, the pickup had already gained a quarter of a
mile lead.
Windsor Police Sgt. Bill Focha said the pursuing officer did not
attempt to match the speed of the pickup truck, and it crashed into
the tree before the officer arrived on the scene.
Police discovered later that the driver had collided with a
vehicle parked on Gemini Drive and was fleeing the scene of that
accident when he first encountered the officer.
Another driver said that the pickup nearly hit his car as he was
turning onto Starr Road just before the crash.Witnesses said the
truck sped across Windsor River Road at more than 80 miles per
hour.
Campos was trapped in the wreckage and had to be removed
unconscious by Windsor firefighters. He was taken to Santa Rosa
Memorial Hospital where he underwent surgery.
The driver was treated at the hospital and released into police
custody. He was arrested for felony drunk driving, hit and run
driving, evading arrest and driving without a license, and was
booked into Juvenile Hall.
