Varsity teams looking to close out season on high note

The North Bay League soccer schedule is winding down for local high school teams this week, as Windsor varsity squads make a final push to extend their seasons.
The varsity boys (5-8-2, 3-6-1) gained a split in their most recent NBL outings, scoring a 1-0 win over Casa Grande before dropping a 3-2 decision at Rancho Cotate.
Zach Perez was the man of the hour against the Gauchos, converting a free kick from 25 yards out for the lone score of the game and his second of the season. On Friday, the Jags ran up against a strong Cougars’ squad, getting goals from Raymundo Duenas and Olin Piotter (assist Duenas) before falling to Rancho, 3-2.
This week, Windsor will play home and away dates against Santa Rosa (Jan. 31, 7 p.m.) and at Montgomery (Feb. 2, 6 p.m.).
Meanwhile the Lady Jaguars (6-8-2, 3-7) suffered a similar fate on the league pitch, falling at Casa Grande (3-1) on Jan. 24 before defeating visiting Rancho Cotate in a rout, 7-0.
Emerging freshman Isabella Chavez tallied Windsor’s goal against the Gauchos while adding a hat trick (3 goals against Rancho. Also finding the net against the Cougars were freshmen Bailey Campanella (2) and Kaitlyn Erickson, while Madison Monroe added one for the Jaguars.
“All of the things we’d been working on in practice (communication, first to ball, movement off the ball) came together,” Jags coach Mark Archambault reported.
Windsor will begin the final league stretch on Jan. 31 (6 p.m.) at Santa Rosa, followed by home dates against Montgomery (Feb. 2, 6 p.m.), Maria Carrillo (Feb. 6, 6 p.m.) and Ukiah (Feb. 9, 7 p.m.).
“Hopefully the Rancho game will provide the catalyst for the remaining four games,” Archambault noted.
