Three dozen people showed up at the Windsor Town Hall Council
Chambers last Thursday evening for an Artists’ Gathering organized
by the Windsor Arts Council. Special guest for the evening was
Joanna Bramel Young, a specialist in Renaissance and Baroque wind
instruments.
Young, who has been collecting the unique instruments for 50
years, discussed and demonstrated authentic replicas of a dozen
early musical instruments including recorders, shawms, crumhorns,
pipes, a tabor and an early ancestor of the bassoon. Such
instruments were played during an era spanning the 1500s to the
1700s.
Also featured during the evening were works of visual art by
Arts Council members. Attendees at the gathering voted for their
favorite works on display.
Winners were: first place – Bernice Coe, watercolor landscape;
second place – Monica Goetz, watercolor landscape; third place tie
– Pete Sylvester, pen and ink landscape, and Sara Barnes, acrylic
landscape; honorable mention – Melinda Gay, acrylic family
scene.
As part of the Art Walls program, works by members are displayed
in the Town Hall lobby. Art displayed at the Artists’ Gathering
will be on exhibit at the Town Hall from now through April.
The Windsor Arts Council organizes Artists’ Gatherings four
times each year. The next gathering is slated for April 29 and will
probably feature a live demonstration by a visual artist, according
to the council’s leader Rosa Diaz-Serrano.
Diaz-Serrano said that membership in the Arts Council is
currently a little more than 50. The group has been organized for
about five years, and welcomes new members.
“We know there are more artists in Windsor,” said
Diaz-Serrano.
Some members are currently making plans for monthly
get-togethers to paint on location, once the weather gets warmer.
Diaz-Serrano said they will probably begin by painting along
Windsor streets.
In addition to quarterly Artists’ Gatherings, upcoming Windsor
art events include The Windsor Fine Arts Show 2004, organized by
the town with assistance from Arts Council members. The show will
take place in the Huerta Gymnasium from June 4 to 12. The Arts
Council is also organizing a show to take place during the Summer
Nights on the Green live concert on Aug. 12.
