Wins over Maria Carrillo, Santa Rosa to push record to 6-3
The Lady Jaguars continued a hot stretch on the varsity softball diamond, scoring shutout wins over Maria Carrillo (10-0) and Santa Rosa (8-0) to keep pace in the North Bay League.
The decisive victories pushed Windsor’s season record to a solid 6-3 and moved them into fifth place in the NBL standings at an even 2-2.
The wins also served as the first games of the season for a key addition to the team, sophomore Sydney Hage, a talented transfer from Cloverdale.
“It was awesome having Sydney be able to play,” WHS head coach Morgan Rasmason said. “She adds more power to our lineup and we can have Kayla (Scott) at first base to keep her in the lineup as well.”
At press time the Jags were preparing for a critical stretch of league games, beginning with a Monday, April 10 home clash with Newman, followed by a Thursday, April 13 visit to Montgomery. Both games start at 4 p.m.
Ladies take two
Windsor sent Scott to the mound in the April 4 meeting with visiting Maria Carrillo, tossing three scoreless innings before handing the ball to Hage in the fourth. Each pitcher allowed just one hit, benefiting from a 12-hit attack as the Jags powered to a 10-0 win.
“We jumped on them, scoring two in the first inning and did well in continuing to score and not letting up, scoring in every inning except the fifth,” Rasmason noted.
Scott (3 IP, 1 hit, K) got the win while Hage (4 IP, 1 hit, 2 Ks) was impressive in mop-up duty. Top hitters were Scott (3 for 3, run, 3 RBIs), De Casas (2 for 4, run, 2 RBIs), Maddie Pellman (2 for 4, 2 runs, RBI), Shay Mendoza (1 for 4, HR, run, 3 RBIs), Hage (1 for 2), Ashley Golding (1 for 4, 2 runs), Gracie Hernandez (1 for 2) and Averie Gehrett (1 for 4, 2 runs).
Hage got the start in the April 6 trip to Santa Rosa, a game that was played in a light drizzle until the skies finally opened up in the late innings. The Jaguars took command with three runs in both the second and third innings, adding another pair in the fifth before the contest was stopped due to rain in the sixth to give Windsor an 8-0 win.
The Windsor defense shined for the straight second game, highlighted by an impressive double play that killed a would-be Panthers rally. On the play, left fielder Alyssa De Casas hauled in a fly ball and fired to catcher Anis Acevedo to nail the tagging runner to end the inning.
Hage (5 IP, 4 hits, 6 Ks) was impressive in earning the win, while leading hitters included De Casas (1 for 4, 3B, RBI), Acevedo (1 for 3, 2B, run, 3 RBIs), Hernandez (1 for 3, 2 RBIs), Gehrett (1 for 3, run, RBI), Scott (1 for 3, run) and Pellman (1 for 2).
