The sky may be the limit for the Windsor High School boys soccer team this winter, as the Jaguars field a talented veteran squad that could challenge for North Bay League supremacy.
The Jags (2-0-1) are already off to a winning start in preseason play, opening the schedule with a scoreless tie with Justin Siena on Nov. 19, followed by shutout wins over El Molino (4-0) and Healdsburg (2-0) last week.
Under returning head coach Andres Flores, the 2016/17 Jags are equal parts skill and experience, arguably boasting the best team the program has seen in nearly a decade.
“You never really know how the chemistry will be, but we have so many talented players on the team that we’re very excited about the season,” said Flores, assisted by veteran coach Gene Sandwina. “This is probably the deepest in terms of talent that we’ve ever had at Windsor.”
The list of returnees starts with senior midfielders Dylon Eddy and Rigo Barragan, both four-year veterans that may be among the best in the area. Also returning are senior goalie Leo Brossard, who will team with his younger brother Paul Brossard to anchor a strong defensive back line.
Other players include Ivan Alvarez Dylan Moberly, Sebastian Avalos, Luis Ayon, Jose Urincho, Derek Neidlinger, Manuel Diaz, Carlos Rosas, Mauricio Mendez, Dylan Manfredi, Raymundo Duenas, Carlos Canchola, Miles Monroe, Tomas Flores, Vicente Mora, Zachary Perez, Eric Arroyo, Jose Patino, Olin Piotter, Grant Sandwina and Andrew Kimball.
With so much depth and talent, the Jaguars figure to use much of the preseason to move players around to find their ideal positions on the field.
“It’s still early in the season so guys are trying to define their roles,” Flores noted. “We’re still trying to figure out who will be where.”
The Jaguars begin the season with lofty goals, with the memory fresh in their minds of falling just short of an NCS playoff berth last year.
“We’d like to finish above .500 for the season and win 75 percent of our games,” Flores said. “We want to make the NCS playoffs but our ultimate goals is to win a championship.”
Scheduling notes
Windsor will resume pre-league action on Dec. 8 at Petaluma (5/7 p.m.), followed by a visit to Campolindo next Tuesday, Dec. 13 (5 p.m.).
