The Windsor High School badminton season is off to a winning start, with the Jaguars recording an exciting 8-7 win over the visiting Montgomery Vikings in the season opener.
First year head coach Dave Medin has stepped up to lead the program this spring and likes what he’s seen from his charges so far.
“My expectation going into this season is to have fun and compete against everyone,” Medin said. “We have a great core of returning players and an enthusiastic core of new players, so my hope is for everyone to improve on their skill sets and be the best teammate and student-athlete they can be.”
Heading the list of varsity players for the Lady Jaguars are seniors; Joelle Canto-Adams, Abby Little, Ember D’Agosta, Kimberly Nguyen, Jenna Strom, Adilene Hernandez and Emily Worlow. Rising stars for the ladies include Sorrelle D’Agosta, Alondra Vazquez, Sarahi Hernandez, Victoria Leon, Samantha Kohlman, Sake and Mina Burns, Derika Braunstein and Baily Cuhna.
Although small in numbers, the varsity boys feature returning standouts Steven Vail, Justin Nguyen and Trevor McKenna.
“We have a shortage when it comes to boys on the team and we hope to bolster that part next season,” Medin noted. “We have a small group of boys we’ve had to throw into the varsity role but are doing admirably. Our freshman and sophomores are very promising and I’m looking forward to the next few seasons to watch them evolve as top tier players.”
Medin has surrounded himself with an impressive group of assistant coaches, including Adam Leslie, a teacher at WHS, Vance Truong, a former player and recent WHS graduate and player, Diego Rivera.
“Although I don’t have a badminton background, I am surrounded by very knowledgeable coaches,” Medin said.
