Wayne R. Hawthorne, M.D., 48, died July 8, 2003, while kayaking
on the Salmon River in the Trinity Alps Wilderness is Siskiyou
County. He was born May 3, 1955, in Santa Ana. He received a double
bachelor of science degree in chemistry and biology from U.C., San
Diego, in 1984. After his family practice residency in Boise,
Idaho, Dr. Hawthorne and his family moved to Crescent City in 1987,
and he worked with Dr. Kasper, Dr. Caldwell and Dr. Sund at Del
Norte Medical Clinic. In 1990, he set up Crescent City Family
Practice, delivered many of Del Norte County’s children, and cared
for people of all ages for the past 13 years. Dr. Hawthorne loved
his work and his patients. He also loved the wilderness areas
surrounding his home, where he often went kayaking and hiking. He
played violin in the Curry-Del Norte Chamber Orchestra and was
involved in many other activities in Del Norte County. Survivors
include his wife of 23 years, Regine; children, Julia, Benjamin,
Katarina, and Nicholas; parents, Robert and Elisabeth Hawthorne of
Healdsburg; sister and brother-in-law, Martha Hawthorne and Bill
Foss, and nephews, Alex and Danny of San Francisco; sister, Anne
Hawthorne of Santa Monica; mother-in-law, Marie-Luise Mohr of
Pinneberg, Germany, and numerous other relatives. He will be
remembered fondly for his kindness, his love for music and nature
and his quiet and witty personality. He was loved by his family and
friends, respected by his colleagues and patients, and enjoyed by
all who knew him. The family has set up the Wayne Hawthorne M.D.
Memorial Scholarship Fund. Dr. Hawthorne’s colleagues have set up
the Wayne Hawthorne Family Trust for his children. Contributions in
his honor can be sent directly to either fund at Six Rivers Bank in
Crescent City.
