Windsor turns back Santa Rosa, runs record to 4-0
The Lady Jaguars retained the top spot in the North Bay League standings last week in impressive fashion, scoring a pair of well-played home victories over Santa Rosa and Montgomery.
The wins kept the Jags unbeaten in the NBL with a perfect 4-0 record, pushing their overall mark to 10-2.
At press time Windsor was preparing to resume league action against visiting Casa Grande on Sept. 27, followed by a key road match at Cardinal Newman on Thursday, Sept. 29. The Jaguars will finish up their first trip around the league next Tuesday, Oct. 4 when they play host to Rancho Cotate. Start times beginning with the frosh are 4/5/6:30 p.m.
Jags on a roll
Windsor was still riding a wave of emotion after ending Maria Carrillo’s 72-match league winning streak a week earlier when they took the court in a home clash with Santa Rosa on Sept. 20.
This match would prove relatively easy in comparison, as the Jaguars cruised to a win in three sets; 25-18, 25-15, 25-13. Statistical leaders for Windsor included Bridget Aikawa (24 assists, 6 aces), Allison Post (16 kills, 6 aces), Destiny Clark (7 kills) and Kylie Benjamin (11 digs, 2 aces).
Windsor flashed the skill and steely resolve that has become synonymous with the team this season in a Sept. 22 home match with Montgomery. The Jags were tested early and often, but persevered in each game to pull out a win in three sets; 25-23. 25-22, 26-24.
“This match was fought tooth and nail for three straight games,” WHS veteran coach Rich Schwarz said. “The Vikings played solid defense and served very consistently which gave us some problems in our passing game, but fortunately for us we came out on top.”
Post led the attack with a sensational 27 kills, while Aikawa added 39 assists and 10 service points. Other standout efforts were had by sophomore middle hitters Elena Dyer and Brittany Johnson, who combined for 11 kills and 4 blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Destiny Clark added 6 kills for the Jaguars.
