It’s been a hot start for the Lady Jaguars in varsity volleyball action this month, collecting another pair of recent victories in pushing their pre-league record to 6-1.
Windsor’s latest exploit came at the expense of Casa Grande and Ukiah last week, easily dispatching both teams in a pair of four-set wins.
Making the start even more remarkable is the fact that Jags’ senior outside hitter Destiny Clark is out due to illness, while the offense features a pair of setters (junior Katie Todd and sophomore Hannah Dyer) who are new to the position. Both have done an outstanding job.
“We’ve been led each match with the hitting of senior outside hitter Elena Dyer, middle hitter Brittany Johnson, junior outside hitter Madison Weber and the blocking of junior middle hitter Brooke Rooney,” Windsor coach Rich Schwarz said. “Both of the new setters have had spots where their potential has shined and we’re excited with the progress each has made.”
In addition, the Jags are rotating six veteran defensive specialists that have been equally effective in sharing playing time. The group includes libero Izzy Earl, senior DS Rene Tolson, junior DS Madison Omiotek and twins Mara and Faith St. Amant.
Jags turn back Wildcats
Windsor’s latest victory came on Sept. 13 at Ukiah, fighting off a determined Wildcats squad to post a win in four games; 25-11, 12-25, 25-22, 25-14.
Statistical leaders for the Jags were Elena Dyer (13 kills, 3 aces), Johnson (11 kills), Weber (6 kills, 2 aces), Todd (15 assists), Hannah Dyer (14 assists), Earl (16 digs, 2 aces), Tolson (16 digs) and Faith St. Amant (11 digs). Tolson and St. Amant passed for a 2.50 serve receive average (3.0 is the max).
Windsor will open the newly aligned Oak Division on Sept. 19 (after press time) against visiting Santa Rosa, last year’s league champion. The Jags will visit Montgomery on Thursday, Sept. 20. Match times starting with the frosh are 4/5/6:30 p.m.
