It should be an exciting and contentious Sonoma County League
volleyball season for the Lady Jaguar varsity squad, if last week¹s
home opener against Healdsburg is any indication.
Windsor came out hitting on all cylinders against the visiting
Lady Greyhounds, winning the first two games of the match, 25-18,
25-18. Healdsburg fought back to win the next two, 25-17 and 25-18,
sending it to a fifth and deciding game. The Lady Hounds fought off
a great effort by Windsor to win game five and the match, 15-8.
Stat leaders for the Lady Jags included Kristyn Straley (6
kills, 9 digs), Taylor Nelson (10 digs) Alyssa Rizo (8 digs) and
setter Chelsea Martin (20 assists).
³The girls played so well and demonstrated one of their
strengths, which is teamwork,² said Windsor coach Kristine Behrens.
³Chelsea Martin did a great job of running the floor.²
The ladies may have suffered a letdown against Rincon Valley
Christian in a non-league match on Thursday. After dropping the
first pair of games, 17-25 and 14-25, the girls bounced back to win
game three, 25-22. RVC closed it out in game four, winning
25-11.
³We got off to a really slow start against RVC,² said Behrens.
³We just weren’t gelling as a team and we had a rough time with our
serve receive.²
Despite the loss, there were some bright spots for Windsor.
Outside hitter Dani Ward had a standout game with nine kills and a
.692 hitting percentage. She also played a strong defensive
game.
The Lady Jags will host Petaluma tonight (Sept. 28) followed by
a road match at Sonoma next Tuesday, Oct. 3. The varsity matches
start at 6:30 p.m.
