Vernon Ray Cussins, age 91, a lifetime resident of Healdsburg,
passed away July 10, 2007 at Memorial Hospital. He is survived by
his loving wife Mildred Cussins, 91, with whom he resided on their
Mill Creek ranch, his daughters and sons in law, Joy Ann and Dave
Solem, Bonnie and Richard Pitkin, five grandchildren Mark, Matt,
and Lisa Solem and Melissa and Jason Pitkin (with wife Kara), three
great grandchildren, Tom Solem, and Madeline and Jacqueline Pitkin.
Vernon was a hard worker and exemplified the American spirit. He
served in World War II in the Maritime Service, worked for a farm
co-op for 25 years, while also working his own ranch. He was a
rancher and blacksmith, and loved horses. Even after retirement,
his strong work ethic prevailed and he, along with his wife,
received the Sonoma County Volunteer of the Year Award in 2005 for
almost 20 years with the Senior Gleaners of the Redwood Empire Food
Bank. He was deeply devoted to his wife of 72 years and loved
spending time with her and his beloved family on his ranch. His
love of life, family, and friends shone through in his welcoming
and friendly personality. He will be truly missed and remembered
fondly by all who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, the Redwood Empire Food Bank will gratefully
accept donations in his name, 3320 Industrial Drive, Santa Rosa, CA
95403, 523-7900.
