Eagles to host Middletown on Friday in Homecoming Game
The Eagles took one on the chin in week six of the fall football campaign, coming out on the wrong end of a 44-7 loss at Kelseyville.
The setback was the most disappointing of the season for Cloverdale, which dropped to 1-3 in league and 2-4 overall.
The Eagles will enjoy a little home cooking this week when they entertain visiting Middletown on Friday, Oct. 6 in the annual Homecoming Game.  Kickoff times starting with the JV are 5 and 7:30 p.m.
The Mustangs (3-0, 4-1) are perched atop the league standings after a 41-0 rout over St. Vincent and figure to be a formidable foe for Cloverdale on Friday.
“I hope our Homecoming Game gives our kids a little fire for the night,” CHS head coach Chad Talley said. “Middletown always has a good team and we’re going to need to be ready. It’s another opportunity for our kids to come in focused and ready to fight.”
The Eagles’ Sept. 29 tilt at Kelseyville offered little in the way of Cloverdale highlights, as the Knights jumped out to an early 7-0 lead before taking a 19-0 cushion into the halftime locker room.
Kelseyville iced the contest with another 19 points in the third quarter and led 44-0 before Cloverdale’s Cesar Buenrostro returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown. It was all the Eagles could muster as the Knights cruised to a 44-7 win.
Offensive leaders for the Eagles included quarterback James Wirt (7-10, 66 yards passing, 2 INTs), running backs Shane Scalese (7-19 yards rushing), John Wesele (7-16 yards rushing), BJ Grady (2-6 yards rushing) and Buenrostro (2-3 yards rushing). Top pass catchers were Mel Alonso (4-36 yards receiving) and Christian Chavez (2-27 yards receiving).
Leading defenders included Wirt (3 tackles, 2 assists, INT), Scalese (3 tackles, 1 assist), Alonso (1 tackle, 2 assists), Luis Pesqueda (3 tackles), Eli Arreola (2 tackles), Chavez (2 tackles), Buenrostro (1 tackle, 1 assist), Grady (1 tackle, 1 assist), Joey Marrufo (1 tackle) and Ben Paine (1 tackle).
