The third tournament of the summer campaign was the charm last
weekend for the Under-14 Windsor Wildcats¹ softball squad, as they
won four of five games played to capture the San Anselmo tourney
championship.
After posting a pair of top-four finishes this summer, the ŒCats
were focused and ready when they took the field on Saturday in San
Anselmo. Windsor posted wins over the Napa Valley Express (16-0,
3-1), San Anselmo Storm (4-0) and avenged a 6-2 loss to the Rohnert
Park Rebels by defeating them in the title game, 9-2.
³I think the girls came into this tournament ready to win,²
Wildcats¹ coach Dennis Lucchesi said. ³We had one bad defensive
game, but overall our pitching and hitting were solid and the
defense was incredible.²
The Wildcats opened the San Anselmo tournament at Drake High
School on Saturday morning with an 18-hit, 16-0 romp over Napa
Valley. Windsor fireballer Courtney Lucchesi was nearly unhittable
as she went the distance, allowing just one hit while fanning two.
Swinging hot bats were Megan Hunt (3 for 4, 2B), Lacey Land (2 for
4, 3B), Katie Delucchi (2 for 2, 2B), Chrissy Pierce (2 for 3) and
Seraphie Allen (1 for 3).
Windsor squared off with the tourney host San Anselmo Storm in
game two, as Land fired a two-hit, four-strikeout gem to lift her
team to a 4-0 win. Top hitters included Kayla Tyler (3 for 3),
Kayla Lowe (1 for 2) and Delucchi (1 for 2).
The ŒCats turned in their only sub-par showing of the tournament
on Saturday afternoon against the Rohnert Park Rebels. Windsor
committed an uncharacteristic eight errors to fall, 6-2. Lucchesi
took the loss, but led the squad with two hits in as many trips.
Other offensive leaders were Allen (1 for 1) and Colby Milliken (1
for 2).
Despite the loss, the Wildcats emerged from pool play on
Saturday as the number one seed in their bracket. Land climbed the
hill on Sunday morning in a rematch with the Napa Valley Express,
turning in a complete-game, four-hit, five-strikeout effort in a
3-1 Windsor victory. Leading the 10-hit attack were Tyler (2 for
3), Lowe (1 for 2) and Hunt (1 for 2).
The win set up a rematch with the Rohnert Park Rebels in the
title game on Sunday afternoon. The defense was outstanding this
time around, led by several great plays from third baseman Chrissy
Pierce. With Lucchesi on the mound, the ŒCats broke a 2-2 tie with
a four-run third inning and went on to post a 9-2 tourney
championship win. Swinging heavy lumber for the locals were Land (2
for 4, 2 2Bs), Lowe (2 for 4) and Pierce (2 for 3).
³It was nice to win after falling just short in our last couple
of tournaments,² Lucchesi said. ³It was actually good to lose one
of the games, it helped us re-focus on Sunday.²
The Wildcats will continue their busy tournament schedule this
weekend in a tournament hosted by Rohnert Park, with all games
being played at Analy High School.
