SEBASTOPOL – The varsity soccer Tigers emerged victorious in
round one of the season series with cross-town rival El Molino,
turning back the visiting Lions on Sept. 14, 5-1.
This week, Analy travels to Casa Grande on Thursday, Sept. 16,
while El Mo enjoys a bye.
Analy on a roll
The Tigers (11-1-1, 1-0) have not skipped a beat this season,
powering to 11 wins in the first 13 matches. Analy goal scorers
against El Mo included Armando Coronel (2), Raffi Dick (2), and
Ryan Willis. Martin Newman tallied the lone goal for El Molino.
“Our  defense actually played very well, but we continually
turned the ball over in the midfield, creating constant pressure on
our back line,” noted El Mo coach Dan Calmeyer.
The Tigers won their second tournament of the season in Redding
last weekend, recording wins over Yuba City, 3-1, Inderkum, 5-1,
Fortuna, 4-1, and Foothill, 4-0.
Tournament goal scorers included Coronel (5), Augustine Reyes
(4), Dick (2), Sergio Hernandez, Richy Amador, Brett Marshall, and
Eli Munger.
“We played very well over the weekend,” noted Tiger coach Peter
Meechan. “Especially the defense, allowing only two goals over four
games.”
Lions fall to Santa Rosa
The Lions (4-5, 0-1) followed up the Analy game with a
well-played, 2-0 loss to Santa Rosa.   El Mo made a key strategy
adjustment, switching from a 4-5-1 formation to a 4-4-2.
“The results were immediate,” noted Calmeyer. “Although we ended
up losing 2-0, we played them even, having two very good chances to
score in the first half, and going into halftime tied at 0-0.”
The Lions’ Brayan Romero hit the post in the second half, and
the Lions conceded just a late goal in the second half as they
pushed up to try for the tie.
