Naughty or nice, the sportsman in your life deserves a few Christmas gifts. I know he has been away too much and deserves nothing but coal but he does take the kids on occasion. Every once in a while he actually brings home some fish or game. This isn’t about the price per pound because, as we all know, that doesn’t compute. So here are a few ideas that might help the Santa in you.
First and foremost, if they like to fish then a fishing license is a perfect gift. They start at $45.93 and last a whole year. There are also the various species cards that can go along with it. If they are into abalone diving or steelhead fishing, then they could also use those “punch cards” that will go along with the license. Most Ace Hardware, Longs or Big 5 stores will have licenses at the counter. You will need to know some basic information for the teller.
It is pretty difficult to buy a piece of equipment for the avid angler. They probably have plenty of fishing rods and reels. Unless you know the exact make and model of the rod or reel they covet, then I would go more for the comfort items that they may not buy themselves but will be sure to love and remember you every time they put them on. My friends down at Outdoor Pro-shop in Cotati had some nice ideas. How about a pair of fleece pants from Simms to wear under your waders? Fishing or hunting, these warm, moisture wicking garments should make most sportsmen happy. Another thought was a Rogue River Hoodie. Again in fleece, this has been a real hot seller and is super comfy and comes in a variety of colors.
For stocking stuffers, they recommended a Gerber Multi-tool. These are super high quality and will find a lot of uses. Also a Work Sharp sharpening tool that will sharpen everything from scissors to serrated knives. For a larger item that will last a lifetime and support a large red bow, a Yeti cooler or a Bradley Smoker will make a great gift. And finally, if you really have no idea what to get or just want to shop by phone, a gift certificate is sure to make someone happy. I spoke with Rick Powers, Captain of the sport fishing vessel The New Sea Angler and he will gladly take your credit card information and send you or the recipient a gift certificate for a fishing trip in the future. This could be a Humboldt squid trip this winter (sure to be on everyone’s bucket list) or a salmon trip this summer. Whatever the trip, the certificate doesn’t ever expire and can be used for whatever trip they desire.
Speaking of fishing, there is still a good crab/ rock fishing going on. They are managing a few ling cod on every trip as well. The Russian River is blown out for at least another week for steelhead fishing. Lake Mendocino and Lake Sonoma are both at their limit and any more rain fall and the Army Corps will start to release. The Smith is kicking out a few steelheads but it is still early in the season yet. Sturgeon fishing will start in earnest this weekend. We have some excellent minus tides and the San Francisco Bay is a brown chocolate color, perfect for sturgeon.
