THE FISHING REPORT

Is there anything more priceless than seeing a kids face when he
walks into the living room on Christmas day and sees his new bike?
Well for the purposes of this report there is. There is the smile
that comes when a kid finally hooks into and lands a fish. This is
especially true for kids that are really into fishing.
Last Friday, we had our annual father-son trip aboard the
Talisman 6 pack boat out of Emeryville skippered by Andy Guiliano.
Bob Besancon and his son Beau, joined me and Charlie for a day of
pot luck fishing San Francisco Bay. What seems is so ironic is that
Beau and I are the fisherman while Charlie and Bob are along for
the ride. Friday morning came and Beau was up at 2:30 a.m. watching
fishing shows waiting for Bob to get up at 4. That was what I was
like when I was a kid. I could never go to sleep before fishing or
hunting day. On the boat, Beau was all about the fishing. He didn’t
miss a drift. Meanwhile Charlie was a sleep in the cabin for half
of the day. Different kids for sure.
Beau did get his fish. He landed a couple nice Stripers and a
Halibut. His smile was priceless. The end of the day came and we
had limited on stripers to 15 pounds and managed three nice
halibut. And Beau couldn’t wait to get back and tell his mother all
about the day while Charlie was more interested in who the Giants
were playing that night.
There are kids out there that have a natural desire to fish and
hunt. If the parents of these kids are also into fishing and
hunting there is a natural gate way to the outdoors but there are
many more parents that don’t have a clue about fishing and somehow
need to placate their kids’ yearnings. The best way to do this is
to hire professionals. They can provide the successful
gratification that these kids need to further their interest. Andy
aboard his “Talisman” is a great option. Most of the fishing is
done in the San Francisco Bay with live bait. Just going to the
bait well before every drift and catching your anchovy can be a lot
of fun…”which one do I choose.” Andy is a consummate professional
and has a 10 year old of his own so he is more than capable of
understanding your young person’s desire to catch a fish. He will
show the angler just how to pick his bait, put it on the hook and
how to manage the drift. When the fish do bite, Andy is right there
with advice on how to reel the fish in. Even if you as a parent are
not that into fishing, taking your kid out is a great way to spend
some quality time with them and help them interact with the
outdoors.
Fishing out of Bodega Bay for Salmon has been spotty lately.
Anglers are reporting anywhere from limits to skunks. Saturday and
Sunday saw scores of about one fish per boat or less. Rick on the
new Sea Angler continues to master the rockfish with limit fishing
coming on most days. Saturday along with limit rock fishing his
crew caught 29 lingcod to 16 pounds. Duxbury Buoy has been putting
out some monster salmon with a 45 pound fish caught last week for
guys fishing out of San Francisco. The Sacramento River Salmon
fishing is just starting albeit slow. The same goes for the Lower
Klamath with guide scores ranging about a fish per rod on mostly
jack Salmon (less than 22 inches).
