Susan Mary (Furlong) Murphy, 48, passed away in Cork City,
Ireland, on January 11, 2005. Susan was the loving wife of Tony
Murphy, and the mother of Diarmuid, Siobhain, Daniel, Megan, and
Fiona Murphy, all of Glengarriff, County Cork, Ireland. Susan was
preceded in death by her mother Dorothy Furlong. She is survived by
her father Ed Furlong of Cazadero, siblings Jim (Laura) Furlong of
Geyserville, Mike (Barbara) Furlong of Cazadero, Dan Furlong of
Sebastopol, Maureen Furlong of Santa Rosa, and Eileen Smith (Mike)
of Caldwell, Idaho; also survived by seven nieces and nephews.
Susan was born in Sebastopol, graduated from Tomales High School
and the University of San Francisco with a degree in nursing. Susan
met her husband on a trip to Europe after college. She was employed
at Sonoma Valley Hospital as a Registered Nurse for several years
before and after marrying Tony. After a few years of
intercontinental commuting they settled in Adrigole on Bantry Bay
in southwestern Ireland. Later they moved a short distance to
Glengarriff where they built and operated Murphy’s Village Hostel
and the Village Kitchen. Susan employed and mentored many
outstanding young women of the community. As a teenager, Susan
dreamed of living on an island and marrying a man who would sing to
her. Both dreams came true. Susan was on a committee seeking to
build a children’s playground in Glengarriff. The community has
decided to honor Susan by naming the playground after her.
