FORESTVILLE—The Lady Lions and Tigers squared off for West
County soccer bragging rights last Friday, as Analy pulled out a
hotly contested, 2-1 win in overtime.
The game featured outstanding defensive play by both goalies-
Analy¹s Breanna Varnadore and El Mo¹s Sheena Urie. Both keepers
flashed toughness and athleticism, turning back frequent scoring
opportunities all afternoon.
Also turning in great efforts were El Mo¹s Emily Lambert, Taylor
Blechel, Katya Zaharoff, Kora Wood, Laura Briano, Brittny
Escamilla, Katie Havstad and Anna Sundberg. Standouts for Analy
included: Hannah Whiteside, Brittany Lynch, Sophia Garcia, Kate
Ferland, Jeanna Cadby, Olivia Weber, Emily Schuster, Lea DeLuca and
Christine Byrne.
The Lady Tigers (6-5-2, 2-1-2) had the better of the action
throughout most of the first half, with midfielder Christine Byrne
putting Analy up 1-0 with a left-footed laser shot from long
range.
The Lions (3-4, 1-3) mounted a furious attack in the last 20
minutes of the second half, culminating in a clutch goal by
standout forward Emily Lambert with less than 30 seconds left in
regulation.
The teams played to a stalemate through the first ten-minute
overtime period, but the Tigers tallied the eventual winning goal
when Sophia Garcia booted a nicely placed corner kick by Lea DeLuca
in for the 2-1 victory.
³It was not a beautiful win, but well deserved, and no game with
El Molino will ever be easy for us,² said Analy coach Joseph Wells.
³I think we¹re starting to gel and settle into a comfortable
playing shape. We still have a ways to go in terms of quality of
play and we’ll keep working to improve.²
Earlier in the week, the Lady Tigers turned back an improved
Sonoma squad, 4-3. The game was knotted at three-all with two
minutes left in regulation when Garcia took a pass from DeLuca,
dribbled past a defender and drove home the winning kick. Garcia
had a pair of goals for Analy, with the others scored by DeLuca
(PK) and Lynch. Kate Ferland chipped in a pair of assists for the
Tigers.
Analy also defeated Middletown, 1-0 in a non-league contest on
Sept. 25. Sophomore midfielder Dalva Dayton scored the game-winner
for the Tigers.
Injury notes: Analy¹s Jeanna Cadby (shoulder) and backup keeper
Emily Wells (ankle) both suffered injuries against Middletown and
will be out for an undetermined length of time.
