Suey Lan Kong, joined our Heavenly Father peacefully in San Francisco, California surrounded by family on April 5, 2019 at the age of 89 from stroke related complications.
Mrs. Kong was predeceased by her husband Leung Kong, her parents Lau Kui Hing and Kong Chow, an older sister, and an older brother. She is survived by her children and sons-in-laws, Juliana & Benson Shi, Eddie Kong, Linda Kong, Judy & Victor Lee, and Nancy & David Kong-Vasquez. She was the sister of Mr. & Mrs. Lit Ng and Mr. & Mrs. Lester Ng. Mrs. Kong was also the loving grandmother to Brian Stoddard, Jessica Lee, Derrick & Marilyn Lee, Sara, Jaydon and Brendan Vasquez and great grandmother to Devin Stoddard. She was also aunt and great aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Kong was born October 27, 1929, in the village of Mai Ong Jon, the city of Huadu in Guangdong, China. She married her husband, Leung of 50 years in 1947. They migrated to Hong Kong during the Chinese Civil War in 1950, where they had 4 children. Her husband migrated to the United States in 1957 to establish himself so that he could bring his family for a better life. Mrs. Kong raised 4 young children single handedly for over 10 years until the family reunited with Mr. Kong in 1968 in Ukiah, California. Their youngest daughter Nancy was born shortly after in 1969.Â
For over 30 years, Mrs. Kong worked in the family’s two grocery stores; first at State Market in Ukiah and then at Penny Fair Market in Cloverdale which she and Mr. Kong started. There wasn’t a job that she didn’t do at the store; from being boss-lady, to stocking shelves, taking care of the produce, butcher, and cashier. She worked incredibly hard throughout her life, very rarely taking a day off, all while taking good care of her family.
During retirement, Mrs. Kong enjoyed gardening, playing mahjong, watching Chinese operas and her favorite TV shows, including Let’s Make a Deal and The Price is Right. She would often be seen walking around Cloverdale, whether it was to the store or to St. Peter’s Catholic Church where she was a devoted parishioner. Always up for new adventures, she traveled abroad and across the United States with family. She also enjoyed spending time with her friends and occasionally going to the casino. Mrs. Kong was known for her Chinese New Year treats. She rarely ate the wonderful things she made as she would rather share with her family and friends.
Mrs. Kong will forever be remembered for her ever present smile, generosity and kindness. She will forever be in our hearts.
