A fast-moving grass fire met with an even faster response Thursday afternoon, drawing seven engine companies and a helicopter before mopping up.
Healdsburg contractor Robin Guilfoyle was working on a house nearby. “When we saw the fire we started to help,” he said, deploying his crew of workers with shovels and garden hoses to work on spot flames. Guilfoyle was stomping out small patches of flame with his work boots as well.
When the fire crews arrived — Healdsburg first, followed quickly by Geyserville and CalFire, the hose crews worked the perimeter of the fire, controlling its spread, while a Cal Fire crew attacked smoldering areas with hand tools.
There were personnel and equipment from Healdsburg, Geyserville, Cloverdale, Cal Fire, Windsor, Sotoyome and the Dry Creek Rancheria, working together on the blaze. Healdsburg Fire Marshall Linda Collister directed the initial attack and then turned incident command over to Cal Fire.
While a Cal Fire spotter plane circled the area, a Cal Fire copter dropped water from a large canvas bucket.
At press time, the cause was not yet determined.
