have joined a global movement to protect the world’s fisheries
by launching an innovative seafood labeling program called
FishWise. This program will help ensure the
long-term supply of seafood and will protect many species of sea
life that are negatively impacted by unsustainable fishing
practices.
FishWise is an educational labeling system for seafood developed
by non-profit Sustainable Fishery Advocates (SFA), that makes it
easy for consumers to select seafood according to its level of
sustainability and to chose seafood that is low in mercury. A
“sustainable seafood” is one that comes from a healthy
population and is caught using methods that do not harm the
surrounding ecosystem.
To introduce the FishWise labeling system, free, educational
events for the public will be held on Saturday, Jan. 7: Fiesta
Market, 550 Gravenstein Hwy. No., Sebastopol: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.;
