March 2 is the birthday of iconic children’s author Dr. Seuss, and it has become a national school holiday of sorts, Read Across America. Students wear pajamas or other festive gear and community members come and share the love of reading with their students, reading from their favorite Seuss books.
At Healdsburg Elementary and the Healdsburg Charter School truffula trees sprouted from the walls, Sneetches danced and the Whos of Whoville welcomed local luminaries such as Mayor Brigette Mansell and council member Joe Naujokas, school board member Jami Kiff, Tribune editor Ray Holley, Corazón Healdsburg Executive Director Leticia Romero among others.
Students dined on green eggs and ham for lunch, and learned about Seuss himself and his alma mater of Dartmouth. The event was organized by HES librarian Greta Mesics. The incredibly Seuss-y decorations were thanks to paraprofessional Lupe King, with assistance from kindergarten teachers Emily Peterson and Stephanie Coventry.
