Favorable weather and great performances were the rule on Saturday at the North Coast Section Redwood Empire Qualifier meet held at Maria Carrillo High School in Santa Rosa, a key step on the road to the CIF State Championships.
Participating athletes gained a spot in the NCS REQ by virtue of a top six effort at last week’s North Bay League finals, while others secured entry with a qualifying mark in their particular event.
The goal for most participants at the NCS REQ was a top seven finish, good for advancement to the prestigious Meet of Champions (MOC) on May 17 and 18 at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill.
In all, Analy and El Molino combined to qualify a dozen athletes to the MOC, an outstanding showing for both schools.Â
Heading the list of MOC qualifiers for the Lions was junior Kassidy Sani, who captured an individual title in the discus (127 feet, 3 inches) and was third in the shot put (35 feet, 11 inches). Also advancing to the MOC for El Molino are Austin Kelsey (2nd place discus 136 feet, 5 inches, 6th place shot put, 42 feet, 8.5 inches), Soul Berna (4th place triple jump, 42 feet, 2.75 inches), Colman Hayes (3rd place discus, 136 feet, 4 inches) and Jeanne Broome (6th place 400 meters, 1:00.41). In addition, the Lions’ 4×100 boys relay team finished fifth and will also advance.
Analy MOC qualifiers include Sierra Atkins (2nd place 1,600 meters, 4:57.10, 4th place 800 meters, 2:19.97), Carolina Dawson (5th place 800 meters, 2:20.09) and Maddie Windsor (4th place 400 meters, 59.82).
