Warm weather and great performances won the day at the annual North Coast Section Redwood Empire Qualifier meet hosted by Redwood High School in Larkspur on May 20, with the Running Jags advancing seven athletes to the Meet of Champions.
Most athletes entered the NCS REQ with a common goal – a top seven finish in their respective event, a mark that would extend their season at least one more week and sustain hope of reaching the coveted CIF State Championships in June.
The MOC, the last qualifier before the prestigious State meet, will be held this Friday and Saturday (May 26-27) at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley. Trials will begin on Friday, followed by the finals on Saturday.
Leading the charge for the Jaguars was senior thrower Ruben Mehler, who continued a remarkable 2017 campaign with individual wins in the shot put and discus events. Also moving on to the MOC is Casey McLaughlin, who took fifth place in the boys long jump.
Leading the way for the varsity girls is double MOC qualifier Maddie Call, who advanced in both hurdles events. In addition, the girls talented freshman foursome of Amber Balogh, Kendall Campos, Lauren McCabe and Jayda Pignataro logged qualifying efforts in both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relays.
