Track & Field
The Running Jaguars combined favorable weather with strong performances at a couple of track meets last weekend, with Windsor well represented at both the Chip Castleberry Invitational in Sebastopol and prestigious Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto.
After battling wind and rain in a stormy March, the elements were not a factor this week, as athletes logged some of their best efforts to date.
“This was our first meet under blue skies and I saw an immediate psychological lift after enduring cold, wet weather at our first few meets,” WHS coach Brandon Bronzan reported from the Castleberry meet. “Across the board, we performed amazingly and this confidence boost will surely help us when we open up league competition on Wednesday (April 3) against El Molino and Piner.”
In all, Windsor had 36 athletes record personal bests, with most coming in Saturday’s meet at Analy.
Highlights from the Chip Castleberry Invitational included junior sprinter Kendall Campos, who captured first place in the 100 meters in a personal best of 13.39.
“I was really proud of the way she ran,” Bronzan noted. “She’s had to deal with some lingering injuries for a long time and was due for a breakthrough.”
Senior Vince Corday continued to shine with wins in both the 400 Meters and 300 Intermediate Hurdles, with his 42.81 clocking in the latter just missing the school record.
Freshman Lilja Chung, the NBL Redwood Division cross country champion, ran away with the 3200 meters.
In addition, the boys 4 x 100 Meter Relay team of Ralph Manalac, Max Sandwina, Jaden Fernandez and Sebastian Vazquez slashed time off their season best with a second-place clocking of 45.43.
Senior Adrian Burger eclipsed the magical 5-minute barrier in the 1,600 Meter event to record a time of 4:56.
“He’s been flirting with the 5-minute mark in the 1,600 for a while,” Bronzan said. “He finally busted through and I’m really proud of him.”
Lucas Chung shines at Stanford
Senior Lucas Chung continued to impress at the elite Stanford Invitational meet, pitting his talents against many of the top runners in the state. Chung turned in his best season effort in the 1,600 Meter event, capturing 16th place overall in a sizzling 4:22.19.
