The all important postseason has arrived for dozens of Windsor High School track and field athletes, hopeful of extending the spring campaign for as long as possible.
The Jaguars will be gunning for peak performance when the North Bay League Track and Field Championships kick off with trials this Wednesday, May 1 on the newly renovated track at Montgomery High School in Santa Rosa at 3 p.m. The NBL finals will take place at Montgomery on Friday, May 3, also beginning at 3 p.m.
The meet will combine the NBL Oak and Redwood Divisions in all events, with the goal for most participating athletes a top six finish to advance to the North Coast Section Redwood Empire Qualifier on May 11. Additionally, the top six marks (that haven’t already qualified as a top six in league) will also advance to the NCS REQ.
The Jaguars wrapped up a solid NBL regular season on April 24 at Santa Rosa, giving the Panthers a good battle in a showcase of varsity talent.
Santa Rosa pulled off a clean sweep in team points, Windsor athletes continued to impress in many individual events.
“I was happy with how the dual meet season went, we went up against some much larger teams, especially on the girls side and were able to hold our own,” Jaguar’s head coach Brandon Bronzan said. “On the boys side, I was pleased at how we dealt with such a strong team. While they won through strength in their field events, we outscored them in the running events.”
Highlights from the April 24 meet with Santa Rosa included winning performances in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meter races from siblings Lucas Chung and Lilja Chung.
Other outstanding efforts came from sprinters Jaden Fernandez and Max Sandwina, who captured first and second place in the 200 meters and were second and third respectively in the 100 meters. Isabela Chavez and Kendall Campos pulled off a similar feat, finishing second and third in both the 100 and 200 meter races. Vince Corday took first place in the 800 meters.
Standout performers in the field events included throwers Kaitylyn Macauley (shot put, discus) and jumpers Ralph Manalac (long jump), Ethan Didero (triple jump) and Gil Brantley (shot put).
“It’s been bun to watch the improvement over the season,” Bronzan said.
