Richard Cartiere, a wine journalist and former reporter,
business section editor and Associated Press staffer, died June 2
following surgery for brain cancer. He was 51.
Cartiere, a resident of Guerneville, was the publisher of the
Wine Market Report, a small newsletter focused on the wine business
in Napa and Sonoma.
After an earlier career at northern California newspapers and
news desk assignments, Cartiere moved to the wine industry beat in
the 1990s.
Cartiere graduated from California State Sacramento in 1982 and
went to work for the Reporter newspaper in Vacaville before joining
the Press Democrat in Santa Rosa as a reporter.
He left the paper in 1986 to work for the Associated Press in
San Francisco, returning to The Press Democrat as an assistant
business editor in 1990.
He left two years later to work on Wine Business Insider, a
newsletter founded by Lewis Purdue.
Later Cartiere established the Wine Market Report. Sent by mail
and fax to subscribers, Cartiere’s newsletter pre-dated the age of
the Internet and was a much-used industry resource.
During this time, Cartiere and longtime partner Richard Gilmore
also hosted conferences presenting various programs on different
portions of the industry, including wine marketing and annual crush
reports.
In recent years, Cartiere’s health had faded and recently he had
to cancel an appearance at the Unified Wine & Grape Symposium
in Sacramento.
No information about a service or next of kin have been
released.
