New at the Healdsburg Library: DVD 364.162 ART: “Art of the Heist – Inside the Art World’s Biggest Thefts” (14 episodes on four discs) and a viewer’s guide. From famous forgeries to Hitler’s plundering, and thefts of Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and Munch’s The Scream, we are given details and reenactments of the process by which these events transpired and the lengths taken to retrieve the art works involved. A fascinating account from the Athena learning program.
Future hopes and headaches
Welcome to the new year of 2016. We’re sure it will be as full of news as all the recent years have been, if not more so. This new year will include a pivotal national election and many continuing discussions over local land use, winery expansions, housing costs, local health care changes, county supervisorial and city hall elections and more.

As a native Californian, having spent my youth in the southern part of the state, I have seen and lived through two major fires. I remember watching the planes drop orange retardant on the flames burning a hillside only miles from my home.

“Alan Turing: The Enigma,” by Andrew Hodges. Now subtitled “The Book that inspired the film The Imitation Game.” 736 pages, illustrated. Turing was credited with his invaluable help in solving codes to end World War II and creating the first computer. His biographer succeeds in giving us a detailed portrait of the enigmatic scientist, along with an account of his groundbreaking work. A good long read.
