The taxpayers’ checkbook

July 1 is the start of a new fiscal year for local governments. This is when the county, cities and schools start spending new tax money based on recently approved 2016-2017 budgets. All these budgets tend to launch with the same conclusions: there is never enough tax revenue; there are too many unmet needs; employee and pension costs keep going up; and everything could be solved if we only agreed to raise new taxes and vote for more long term debt bonds.

We have enjoyed seeing so many of you lately as our community continues to work through our recovery from the emergency of late October and early November. We continue to stay positive, trying out new ideas every few months as we try to meet our community’s needs.

Decoding Teenagers: Back in time

My two teenagers have me addicted to a show that is airing on Netflix right now. It’s based in the 80s, that wonderful time in history when cassette tapes still rocked, MTV was becoming a national phenomenon and Madonna and Michael Jackson saturated the radio. My teens couldn’t help but comment on the clothes and hair styles of the day. They thought the outfits were nerdy and the hair too big on both the male and female actors.
