Keeping the Faith: America the diverse
Near as I can figure, Arline and I arrived in Scranton, Pennsylvania, about seven years after Joe Biden, at age 10, moved to Delaware with his family. We had been married in Pasadena, California, exactly one week before, and had driven from the wedding reception to Scranton in six days. Happy honeymoon, dear.
Let’s Book It: Book Groups
Four library book groups are again meeting this month, and what wonderful selections to discuss. “The Last Bookaneer” is a swashbuckling tale about greed, highlighting thieves, spies, smugglers and tricksters, whereas “The Secret Place” is a terrifying mystery, featuring giddy, devious and untrustworthy schoolgirls. The middle schoolers will be enjoying the charming graphic novels “Awkward” and “Brave,” full of humor, realism and kindness.

Prop 64, the Adult Use of Marijuana Act, which passed on Election Day, went into effect on midnight Nov. 9. While it’s still too early to make accurate predictions, the law has clearly made a difference in the lives of local citizens. Indeed, it’s now legal for individuals to grow marijuana for personal use and to posses it and smoke it in the privacy of their own homes, except in Windsor, Healdsburg, Sonoma and other communities that have adopted urgency moratoriums.

Living with fire
Mankind has lived with fire almost forever. We couldn’t live without fire unless we switched to eating only raw food and figured out some other way to keep alive and warm during winter weather. Those illustrations of caveman life found in elementary school textbooks never looked that desirable or comfy. But, as we know all too well, there is good fire and there is really bad fire.
