Around Town

Bright Futures (and D&D)

The changing landscape of vineyard labor

Latino music playing in the vineyards as the sun rises, men shouting to be heard over roaring engines as their hands move with the precision of a surgeon with scalpel cutting one cluster then quickly another. Trucks barreling along narrow country roads delivering grapes prior to the heat of day. The entire county smelling of grape aromas — earthy, fruity, sweet and floral smells permeate the air.

New Year’s resolutions

As a first year County Supervisor, I often tell people that “I am so full of purpose I might pop.” I love my job … and I don’t take a bit of it for granted. Some people ask me how I deal with the negative aspects of being a local elected official - the accusations, the blame and the demands to fix everything under the sun. I usually respond that the good, and the opportunity to do more good, is what drives me through the difficulty. At this level of government, I can truly work with you all to shape the future of our community. What an awesome responsiblity and opportunity. As we reach the end of 2015, I wanted to share some thoughts on what has been a non-stop thrill ride of a year.

The older we get, the better we were

In a few weeks all of us will mark a full year of living in this COVID-19 time of a pandemic, sheltering in place and worrying about what terrible things like more wildfires, a positive virus test or loss of a job might happen next. What has this year of disease, tension, uncertainty and new daily living patterns done to us? Are we all becoming Zoombies?
