Editor: Although I have affection for some supporters of
renovating the existing bridge over the Russian River, I must
disagree with them. It is an old, worn-out, unsafe eyesore. It
certainly is not unique. There are thousands of nearly identical
bridges throughout the United States. In fact, there is a similar
bridge just a few hundred feet away from it. This is not a
beautiful entrance to our town, and the design of the bridge
actually obscures the view until one is off the west end of the
bridge. A new bridge could be built with a wonderful design, wider
lanes, and no girders for the pigeons to land on and defecate on
the pedestrian walkways.
Not everything old is historic, legendary, or beautiful. Some
things are just old, and need to be replaced. What will be next? A
movement to preserve the former Healdsburg Hospital on Johnson
Street?
Please, the bridge has seen its time, and should be
replaced.
