Classic cars, music and food will be featured at the annual Healdsburg High School Car Show and Street Fair. It will be the fourth year for the event and is expected to have the biggest turnout yet.
“There will be good music, old cars and good times,” said Brian Osborn, Healdsburg High School Auto Shop instructor.
The free car show and street fair will take place on Saturday, April 28 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Healdsburg High School, 1024 Prince Avenue.
In recent years interest in auto mechanics at Healdsburg high has grown and with it so has class size. This semester 50 students are enrolled in the auto shop class. Osborn said next semester, 80 students are enrolled.
“We added a whole other section of auto shop,” he said. “It’s an up and coming program.”
The car show is the only fundraiser for the auto shop class and is essential for purchasing car parts and tools for the growing program. Last year the event raised more than $4,500 and featured 140 cars. This year Osborn has a goal of 150 cars and hopes to raise even more money than last year.
The auto shop class includes taking cars that run (and some that don’t) and teaching students the processes of finding and solving issues. Osborn said the class is about more than teaching students how to perform an oil change.
“We are teaching them how to problem-solve and work with their hands,” he said. “They are learning by hands-on experience how to go out and get their tools and not be scared to tackle a problem.”
During the event, attendees will have the chance to take a peek under the hood of student projects as well as take a student-led tour of the auto shop classroom.
Osborn said even those not interested in cars should come out for the day.
The high school administration will be running the street fair, which includes displays of work done by HHS classes; Construction And Sustainability Academy (CASA), art and digital media and Future Farmers of America.
There will also be food available prepared by students in the Healdsburg high culinary program.
During the event attendees can purchase raffle tickets to win prizes donated from local establishments. Osborn said the street fair features 12 vendors from local businesses. “Buying from any vendor there you are supporting high school kids,” he said.
