Ludwig V. Saccomano
Tom Brokaw once credited the Greatest Generation with much of the freedom and affluence that Americans enjoy today. Ludwig Saccomano‘s family say that he was one those men whom Brokaw was speaking about.
When Ludwig died on March 24, 2016, he was age 92 and just five days short of his 64th wedding anniversary. He was a Sonoma County resident for over 70 years. He was born Lodovico, in Cleveland, Ohio to Louis (Luigi) and Albina Saccomano.
The family moved to California after Luigi found work here. They moved from San Francisco to Healdsburg, Asti, Cloverdale and finally Geyserville. He served during WWII in the Army Corps of Engineers. Ludwig was stationed for several years in the Asiatic Pacific campaign and was awarded a bronze star in the Philippines.
In 1946 he purchased a ranch in Geyserville and in 1996 he moved his family to Santa Rosa. In 1952 Ludwig took time to visit relatives in Italy, where he found who would be his bride for 63 of the best years of his life. He married Alba Giovanna Zolli in a small town of Villanova at a church called San Giacomo, found in the northeast corner of Italy in the Provence of Udine. They loved and worked together building a home and life, and a short time later arrived their only son Paul.
Ludwig worked all his life until his retirement doing carpentry, maintenance, ranching, making really tasty wine vinegar, odd jobs, etc. Ludwig enjoyed his family, hunting, dancing, talking and sharing stories and occasionally told a joke or two to make people laugh. He loved taking trips to Italy, Las Vegas, Reno and Alaska. According to his family, anyone who spent any time with him, and really knew him, here in the U.S. as well as in Italy, will miss him dearly.
He is survived by his wife (Alba) and their son (Paul), his nephew David and his wife Lynn and both of their daughters Brittany (Zach), and Lauren. He really loved being Brittany’s and Lauren’s Zio. Ludwig is predeceased by both his parents, his brother Fedele and his wife Enis and niece Pamela.
The family offers a special thanks to the following: Peggy O., Debbie and Barbara, the residents and staff at Golden Living – London House Sonoma, Sonoma Valley Hospital ER and ICU departments, numerous cousins, and all his friends.
