Coach Jared Greninger hopes to carry on winning tradition
The Jared Greninger hoops era is set to begin for the Jaguars this month, as the enthusiastic first-year head varsity coach takes over for veteran Windsor coach Travis Taylor.
Greninger’s first order of business will be to carry on the long winning tradition of Windsor High School basketball over the past decade, a run that included two North Bay League titles in the past three seasons.
The Jags are coming off a tremendous 2017-18 campaign that featured an overall record of 23-6 and another trip to the North Coast Section playoffs.
Although the Jaguars graduated four of five starters from that squad, this year’s team will boast a solid mix of six returning veterans and five promising newcomers looking to make their mark.
The list of varsity returnees includes senior Jordan Merical, a returning starting guard and excellent perimeter shooter, senior forward Jack Amormino, senior guard Andrew Corcoran, senior guard Vince Corday and junior guards Jaden Ruybalid and Billy Boyle.
“Merical is a three-year varsity player, a knock-down shooter and a great team leader who demands the most out of his teammates,” Greninger noted. “Amormino is a two-year varsity player and a leader on the court with his offensive and defensive awareness. He has the ability to finish around the hoop against much taller players.”
First-year varsity athletes are juniors Christian Jernigan, Luke Kraft and Dante Mendoza and sophomores Carter Daniel and Khalil Bhangoo.
“At 6’ 5” Jernigan has the potential to be a solid contributor,” Greninger predicted. “His size and physicality will make him a tough match-up around the basket.”
In the first season of league realignment, Windsor will compete in the tough North Bay League Oak Division, along with North Bay powers Cardinal Newman, Montgomery, Analy, Piner and Santa Rosa.
“It’s hard to predict what’s going to happen in our reconfigured NBL,” Greninger said. “I truly believe that all six teams are talented enough to win on any given night and I’m excited to battle our league rivals in the upcoming season.”
Scheduling notes
The Jaguars will open the preseason schedule in with the annual Foundation Game at Petaluma High School on Tuesday, Nov. 20 (7 p.m.) and host the Alumni Game on Wednesday, Nov. 21 (7 p.m.). Windsor will visit Healdsburg on Saturday, Nov. 24 in a 7 p.m. tip-off.
The Jags will host the annual Windsor Holiday Shootout Tournament on Dec. 26-29 and kick off the league schedule on Jan. 3 against visiting Montgomery.
