Michael Brooks is recognizable from the Shakespeare on the Green
performances held this summer on the Windsor Town Green. Michael is
on the Board of Directors for Windsor Shakespeare on the Green and
can be found at the Sunday Farmers’ Market raising awareness about
Windsor’s unique theatre company.
Shakespeare on the Green was founded in 2004 with the goal of
providing Windsor residents with free and easy access to
Shakespeare. In addition to producing an annual summer festival,
Shakespeare on the Green works with local schools to create
community outreach programs that provide young children with the
experience of live theatre. As Michael said, “Shakespeare on the
Green is about bringing Shakespeare to people who normally wouldn’t
experience it or couldn’t afford it.”
Michael moved to Windsor seven years ago from San Francisco,
because he and his wife wanted a more child friendly community in
which to raise their children. He became involved with Shakespeare
on the Green after he heard about it from a friend. Shakespeare on
the Green allows Michael to pursue his passion for the
Shakespearean Theatre, while at the same time helping him to give
back to the Windsor community.
Michael says that opening night of the Summer Shakespeare
Festival is an extremely rewarding experience because it brings
together all of Windsor. “Shakespeare on the Green has become part
of community life. A lot of people have moved to Windsor in the
last few years and events on the Green, like Shakespeare and the
Farmers’ Market, bring the community together and allow people to
meet one another.”
This year’s Shakespeare Summer Festival showcased Shakespeare’s
last play, The Tempest. The Tempest ran for two weekends in mid
July and was well attended by Windsor residents and other Sonoma
Countians, who came to see good theatre and soak up Windsor’s small
town charm. For more information about Windsor Shakespeare on the
