Senior wrestler Andres Torres etched his name in the WHS sports
history books on Saturday, capturing second place in the 114-pound
weight class at the North Coast Section Championships at Newark
Memorial High School.
The top-four NCS finish qualified Torres for his third straight
trip to the prestigious CIF State Championships this Friday and
Saturday (Mar. 4-5) at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.
Torres came agonizingly close to winning an NCS individual
title, dropping a 6-1 second-round, overtime decision to Joe
Ramirez of DeLaSalle in the championship match.
“He had a great run into the finals, winning each match by a
major decision or a pin,” said Jags head coach Rich Carnation.
“Andres is currently ranked ninth in the State and Ramirez is
ranked seventh, so he’s going to have to improve slightly this week
so he can come back home with a State medal, his goal all year
long.”
Torres was part of a large Windsor contingent that included 10
NCS qualifiers.
Other participating athletes were 105-pound freshman Perez Perez
(0-2), 121-pound freshman Trevor Silva (3-2), 127-pounder Jake
Sprouse (1-2), 132-pound junior Ishi Silva (2-2), 137-pound senior
Stephen Walker (1-2), 147-pound senior Dalton Mathia (2-2),
154-pound junior Alexander Lee (0-2), 191-pound sophomore Oscar
Rios (2-2), and 217-pound senior Justin Oxford (4-2).
Upcoming
tournaments
Following the State meet this weekend, Windsor will be
well-represented at the Frosh/Soph State championships in
Bakersfield on Mar. 11-12.
