General Motors donates 500,000 face masks to California schools
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond has announced that the California Department of Education (CDE) will distribute 500,000 face masks donated by General Motors (GM) to schools in need across the state.

LOVE IS GREATER THAN FEAR — You might have noticed encouraging signs popping up around Sebastopol: “Love is also contagious” and “6 feet between us is no match for the love among us.” You can see the signs outside of Papas y Pollos, in the town square, at Highway 12 and Morris Street, across the street from Screamin’ Mimi’s ice cream (above) and decorating the home of sign maker Margaret Howe. Other sign makers include Maya Pace, Ann Hamilton, Bryan Huggins and Kenna Lee. “We wanted to make a loving connection with our community and emit soothing energy amidst the fear,” said Howe. “Also to help people smile.”
Country Summer postponed to 2021, virtual event planned for June
Country Summer, Northern California’s biggest country music festival has been postponed until June 25 to 27, 2021. Country Summer was meant to take place in June 2020, but when California was hit hard by COVID-19, the annual three-day event was rescheduled for Oct. 23 to 25, 2020.

Big John’s Market to reopen on Oct. 31, at 3 p.m.
Big John's Market at 1345 Healdsburg Ave. (corner of Dry Creek Road) plans to reopen to the public at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 31 following the recent days of power outage and wildfire evacuations.
California HOPE receives $1 million grant to provide mental health services to wildfire victims
The Sonoma County Department of Health Services (DHS) has received a $1 million grant to continue the California Helping Outreach Possibilities Empowering (HOPE) program, which delivers mental health services targeting those affected by the wildfires in October 2017.
Creativity on display at Healdsburg Junior High
Last week Healdsburg Junior High held its first Annual Creative Exhibition, showcasing the hard work and imagination of students from six different elective courses. Students, parents and teachers gathered at the multi-purpose room, where artwork lined the walls, robot obstacle courses took center stage and throwback songs like the Macarena were cued up by the effervescent Spanish teacher, Carlos Diaz. The six electives represented were Fine Arts, Recycled Arts, Robotics, Spanish, Leadership and Technology, and for each area students chose to display a piece of work they were most proud of from the current school year.
