So, sometimes government can move swiftly. I was very heartened to see PermitSonoma meeting last week to discuss efforts to both replace housing in the county, and find ways to create more housing on both a permanent and temporary basis.

Five seventh graders at The Healdsburg School have made the finals of the World Scholar’s Cup after scoring highly in a round of the academic competition in Athens, Greece.
Gratitude and Giving at Dia de los Muertos, Oct. 29
Corazón Healdsburg and the City of Healdsburg announce a day of community gathering, healing and giving in the aftermath of the worst natural disaster in the area’s history. In the spirit of the traditional Dia de Los Muertos event, a community altar will hold the remembrances of ancestors, friends, relatives and loved ones no longer with us. In the spirit of community, attendees will share in a posole feed. In the spirit of recovery, there will be an outlet for play and creativity for children – all with the backdrop of live music.

New fund to help undocumented immigrants affected by Sonoma County fires
A coalition of immigrant service providers and advocates have launched the UndocuFund for fire relief in Sonoma County to provide direct assistance to undocumented Sonoma County residents who are victims of the Northern California fires. As of Oct. 15, $85,000 had been raised by local supporters and donors. One hundred percent of all donations will go to victim support, with the first $50,000 in donations matched by The California Wellness Foundation.
Healthcare Foundation to support bilingual mental health
The Healthcare Foundation of Northern Sonoma County is launching “The Mental Health Pipeline Project,” an initiative to place more bilingual mental health professionals in northern Sonoma County.

The worst wildfires in California history devoured more than 85,000 acres in Sonoma County in mid-October, destroying more than 5,700 homes and businesses. Twenty three people lost their lives in the fires in Sonoma County, and, as of this writing, 50 people are still missing. Tens of thousands of people throughout the county were evacuated. For two weeks, people lived from Nixle alert to Nixle alert, waiting to see if their neighborhood would be next. The cause of the fires remains unknown.

Humane Society offers free veterinary services for county fire victims
In response to the unprecedented disaster which has affected the community so deeply, the Sonoma Humane Society is launching charity veterinary services for pet owners who have suffered financial loss in recent fires and need assistance to care for their pets. Services are limited to basic wellness care and urgent fire related injuries.
