The flurry of civic gratitude concluded with the annual Marie Sparks Volunteer of the Year Award. The annual program was started in 1996 after the death of Marie Sparks, well known and recognized for her volunteer efforts in the community. Sparks is remembered for her passion, persistence and grit, which encouraged many to join her in volunteering.

"For me, being present was not optional," writes the former mayor. "While I attended as an individual, my role on the City Council carries a profound responsibility to do everything I can to protect and support our community."

This week's police news starts off, "7:39am The Reporting Party (RP) on Old Redwood Highway was assaulted on March 21, 2026. He was punched in the face and pushed to the ground. The information was relayed to Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO). A Sheriff’s deputy responded and subsequently contacted the suspect. The suspect was arrested by SCSO."

The Healdsburg City Council spent much of the day on March 25 discussing existing and future city goals, and how to maintain and enhance services in a goal-setting session for the coming year.

A full spread of fruit, cookies and cupcakes, coffee and tea helped take the edge off dinner-hour munchies at the SMART Open House in Healdsburg on March 23.

Space for vendors has always been a concern for the Farmers’ Market organization and the vendors themselves. “I’ll confess to not being a fan of it initially,” Janet Ciel said. “I realized it would be challenging to put vendors up there (on the stage area), as they can’t drive a car onto it. Everything will have to go up via stairs or a ramp.” But as she’s become used to the space, she’s recognized its potential.

The City Council met on Monday, March 16, this week to issue a pair of proclamations, hear a report from its fire department and a request for support for a quarter-cent sales tax extension for SMART, and discuss ways to streamline and update its protocols.
