Local high school wrestlers continued to prep for the upcoming Sonoma County League season with participation in a couple of recent tournaments.
The Analy Tigers sent a 10-man contingent to the annual San Marin Green and Gold tourney in Novato on Dec. 12, with two athletes coming away with top-three medals.
Leading the charge for the Tigers were 106-pound Trevor Bagan, who went 3-0 in his weight class to claim a first-place. Also ascending the podium was 113-pound Dalton Gavriloff, who navigated his bracket with a 2-1 record to bring home a third-place medal.
Other competing athletes for Analy were 126-pound Austin Henry (2-2), 145-pound Yogi Bazzano (2-2), 170-pound Cosmo Hahn (2-2), 182-pound Elan Seabourne (1-2), 120-pound Jackson Jones (0-2), 138-pound Angel McClelland (0-2), 152-pound Ben Talcott (0-2), and 220-pounder Alex Perreira (0-2).
All things considered, Analy’s overall performance was a good sign for a team with league title aspirations.
“It was great bringing home a first and a third at the tournament,” Tigers coach Ryan Stevens reported. “We still have wrestlers figuring out their weights, but I feel that when we have a stronger line-up and wrestlers are at their proper weights we’ll be bringing home more medals. This team is very coachable and are great listeners; those kinds of kids make the best wrestlers,” he added.
Lions in good showing
The El Molino Lions have also been hitting the mat with ferocity, as evidenced by a good shoring at the Chukchansi Invitational meet in Madera on Dec. 12.
The annual two-day meet was a high-level tournament which served as a good litmus test for veteran athletes, with very few easy matches.
Heading the El Mo five-man contingent was 140-pound senior veteran Sam MacDonell, who went 6-2 for the tournament to capture a solid fourth place. MacDonell narrowly lost a battle for third place in overtime.
Also turning in good individual efforts at Chuckchansi were 170-pound Thomas Mitchell (2-2), 145-pound Eddie Lopez (1-2), 182-pound Leo Garza (1-2) and heavyweight Travis Adams (0-2).
