Mother Nature has been wreaking havoc with high school baseball and softball schedules this month, with teams scrambling to reschedule recently washed out games.
That’s been the story for Windsor High School baseball and softball teams, logging a combined three games in the first three weeks of the season.
The WHS baseball squad (1-1) managed just one outing last week, a 5-4 extra-inning loss at Santa Rosa in the NBL opener on March 8.
“It was 13 days between our first and second game of the season, and unfortunately it showed,” head coach Dave Avila reported. “We lost in eight innings to an inspired Santa Rosa squad, who was playing their seventh game of the season.”
Starting pitcher Tyler Hellums deserved a better fate, tossing 5.1 innings of three-hit ball while fanning 10 Panthers.
”He gave up only one hit that reached the outfield and walked five,” Avila noted. “Other than that he was dominant.”
The Jaguars led 3-1 after four innings before Santa Rosa pushed across a pair of runs in the fifth to tie it up. Down 4-3 in the seventh, Hellums singled and Cyrus Soltanizadeh followed with a double off the center field wall to send the contest into extra frames knotted at 4-4. But the Panthers would tally the winning run in the eighth inning to escape with a 5-4 win.
“Santa Rosa resorted to ‘small ball’ and executed well,” Avila said. “Along with a mixture of walks and mental errors it cost us a win, but the more we get out on the field the less these things will happen.”
Pacing the bat attack for Windsor were Chris Torres (2 for 4), Hellums (2 for 4), Soltanizadeh (1 for 4, 2B, RBI), Will Matthews (1 for 4, 2B, run), Joseph Soltanizadeh (1 for 3), Brett Boudrow (1 for 1, 2B, run), Cameron Hayman (1 for 3, 2B) and Gary Hall (1 for 1).
This week, the Jaguars will travel to Concord on March 12 (after press time) and return home to host Healdsburg (Wednesday, March 13 and El Molino (Friday, March 15). All games start at 4 p.m.  Windsor will play in the A.L. Rabinovitz Tournament on March 19 and 20 (times and locations, TBA).
Lady Jags log win
The WHS varsity softball team opened the 2019 campaign in winning fashion on March 4, recording an impressive 3-1 win over visiting Redwood.
Senior hurler Kayla Scott went the distance, firing seven innings of eight-hit ball, yielding one earned run while fanning 10 for the victory. Top hitters included Gracie Hernandez (3 for 3), Averie Gherett (2 for 3, run), Savanna Cordova (1 for 3, 2B, run, 2 RBIs) and Kasandra Jaramillo (1 for 3, RBI).
At press time the Lady Jags were preparing to host American Canyon on March 12, followed by a March 14 home clash with Napa. Both games start at 4 p.m.
