El Molino wraps up 2018 season with 3-7 record
The El Molino Lions put the finishing touches on a successful fall football campaign on Friday in the opening round of the North Coast Section Division 4 playoffs, falling to #6 seeded Fortuna, 55-14.
The loss gave the Lions a final season record of 3-7.
The Lions made the trek to Fortuna as the #11 seed, taking the field on Friday as big underdogs.
The Huskies took control from the opening gun, scoring on each of their first six possessions in an explosive start.  The Lions got on the board in the second quarter on a 63-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Wyatt Stringfellow to receiver Jalen Hall, but still trailed 49-7 at the half.
Down by seven touchdowns in the fourth quarter, the Lions scored the game’s final touchdown on a 30-yard pick-six by senior defender Sam Wilson-Mietz as Fortuna powered to a 55-14 victory.
“Fortuna was bigger and more physical than we were, and their offense did a great job,” El Mo head coach Randy Parmeter said, in praising the Huskies. “We struggled on offense.”
Overall, the Lions had nothing to hang their heads about following Friday’s game.
While the team was badly undermanned in most games, it embraced the underdog role with heart and passion.
“Our kids played hard all year, and I was proud of them,” he said.
Lions earn all-league honors
Senior running back/defensive back Sam Wilson-Mietz capped a sensational season by being awarded the NBL Redwood Division’s “Back of the Year.” He also was named first team all league as a defensive back and was named first team kicker.
Joining Wilson-Mietz on the all league squad were El Mo’s Cody Brooke (1st team offensive/defensive line), Chase Nicholls (1st team offensive line), Austin Kelsey (1st team offensive line), Jackson Dunkle (2nd team wide receiver), Ryan Rodgers (2nd team defensive line) and Wyatt Stringfellow (2nd team quarterback).
