A community need
EDITOR: Dear Sebastopol City Council: Our community wants desirable bike paths. I was surprised when I got this question from three of four applicants we talked to about our rental house on the south side of Sebastopol. When asked what they were looking for, three applicants wanted a good way for their kids to ride a bike to school.
Then I was really surprised when I heard this desire again a fourth time. This time from a person moving here from Utah as a new teacher at the Sebastopol Charter School. She hoped to ride a bike to school every day with her two kids. Each was disappointed to hear that the only decent bikeway was along a highway mostly between parked cars and highway traffic. Telling them that soon there may be a painted bike lanes along this highway did not change their disappointment. This is a real community need. It is long overdue for council action.

A moral disaster
EDITOR: What kind of a society penalizes its sick, poor and elderly? Apparently a society led by Donald Trump, according to the report by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. Trumpcare, as it is now called, is a tragedy in the making. Twenty three million more of our citizens would be left without insurance. Others with serious illnesses would face incredibly steep premiums. And older people of lower incomes would disproportionately lose coverage.
This is more than a medical disaster. It is a moral disaster as well. I fear we are losing our collective soul. We must resist this health care plan. Our representatives agree but others throughout the country apparently think this plan is peachy. Write and call your friends and relatives in conservative states and urge them to join organizations like Indivisible or Organizing for Action, groups that are already standing against this appalling legislation. We have too much to lose to stay silent.

Never satisfied
EDITOR: I just finished reading your excellent article on the reduction of deputies in Guerneville. The people there are never satisfied. They wouldn’t let a homeless shelter happen so now they expect the deputies to watch everything and do something about it.
Well, good luck with that one. Law enforcement’s job is not babysitting. It is crime prevention and investigation. If these river people want to feel safer, then maybe they should do their own patrolling. Everybody wants everything but they are not willing to do anything themselves. Thanks for letting me express my opinion.

Birthday proposal
EDITOR: A big thank you to the young man on a skateboard in Sebastopol who, on May 11, stopped to say he loved me and to ask me to be his wife. You made my 80th birthday very special.
