Political inaction
Editor: At the April 3 Sebastopol City Council meeting on the steep yearly increase of $700 or more on the sewer and water rates, which has no assistance for low-income and seniors, I suggested that conservation opportunities should be included to offset the onerous increases. A councilmember said that conservation would mean we would “sell” less water and “make” less money. That’s true, but isn’t that what the people of Sebastopol want — to use less? So, are we happy just putting a few low flow shower heads in, but not in really reducing our overall water usage, and more important and costly, sewage disposal? Yes, we need to repair, replace and maintain our utilities, but this situation has been caused by decades of political inaction, not on the part of the users.
