HHS event on April 23
EDITOR: We are thrilled to announce the second annual Healdsburg High School CARnival & Street Fair to be held at the high school campus on Saturday, April 29. The day begins at 10 a.m. and runs until 2 p.m.
The Healdsburg High School CARnival & Street Fair combines our amazing annual car show with a fabulous showcase featuring incredible student projects in areas ranging from culinary arts, agricultural science, visual and performing arts, construction, video, engineering, drama, and much more, including food, refreshments and art exhibits.
Visitors can also explore the newly remodeled front of our campus and our new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) building courtesy of a large investment in school district renovations by the Healdsburg community. We are honored to include a building dedication during this special day on behalf of two amazing former science teachers, Mr. Giampoali and Mr. Filippi. The dedication will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the new STEM building.
We invite all students, teachers, parents and community members to attend throughout the day and enjoy the many exciting things going on at Healdsburg High School.
If you are interested in participating in the Street Fair by serving as a volunteer, hosting a booth, or donating financial support, please contact: Dr. Lori Rhodes at lr*****@hu**.com, Linus Lancaster at ll********@hu**.com, or Karen Perez at kp****@hu**.com, or call the school at 431-3420. If you are interested in registering or volunteering in the CARnival (car show), please contact Brian Osborn at bo*****@hu**.com.
We thank you, the Healdsburg community, for your generous support, and we look forward to seeing you on April 29.

First they came for the immigrants
EDITOR: The Trump regime is implementing all of the harshest promises he made to his Tea Party base. He wishes to deport over 11 million immigrants, mostly women and children. He states “only criminals” but one day later we find all immigrants are targeted, with their primary crime being their existence north of the border. He certainly wishes to use the National Guard, but then tries to retract this.
Trump supporters in legislatures and governors, surprisingly only in red states, are enacting laws against protesting of any kind, in the interests of public safety. I guess all those who joined the Women’s March on Washington should have been arrested. Were they really all outside agitators and paid operatives of the left wing? Didn’t look that way to me at the march in Santa Rosa.
This is only the beginning. Enemies of the Trump regime are all immigrants, all protestors, the free press (except Fox News), liberals, progressives, moderates; everyone except his Tea Party base. He has found the enemy and it is us.
I hope everyone can read Lisa Steinkamp’s Feb. 16 letter “Sanctuary” where she described her family’s ordeal under the Nazi regime. “This was the leader who sold his hatred as hope for the poorest citizens of his country, promising Germany First!”
We need to remember the words of German pastor Martin Niemoller, who was imprisoned in a concentration camp for eight years: “First they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew. Then they came for the Communists and I did not speak out because I was not a Communist. Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak out for me.”

FMA response
EDITOR: As president of the Fitch Mountain Association, I would like to offer clarifications regarding Ted Calvert’s March 1 letter, “Dog park or wilderness preserve?”
In our earliest FMA trustee-approved “Fitch Mountain Preserve Vision Statement,” sent to the city in March 2016, we stated: “Dogs should be on leash to protect the wildlife and safety of others, and the use and proper disposal of dog waste bags should be required and enforced.” That has been our consistent policy, and we were very pleased to see that position expressed in detail in the initial Nov. 2016 draft management plan. We encourage walkers – with or to read “Dog Walking,” on pp. 80-81 in the current version of the plan on the City of Healdsburg website at http://www.ci.healdsburg.ca.us/697/Fitch-Mountain-Management-Plan. We endorse those policies.
Ted wrote, “During these (public) meetings, Fitch Mountain Association dog owners stated ‘My dog is always off leash, and I will continue to have my dogs on the mountain!’” To our knowledge, only one person stood up to make that claim, in two separate public meetings, and he is not an FMA member. Nor do his views reflect ours.
An online survey of Fitch Mountain residents revealed that about 40 percent walk Fitch Mountain with their dog, which is, of course, fine with us. But we invite them, and all future dog-walkers, for the serenity and safety of other walkers (and their dogs) and of Fitch Mountain wildlife, to get a leash.
