A perspective on NorCal noise

Thanks to the city for arranging to have an attorney, with an aviation-law background, at the airport subcommittee meeting. After an hour or more of legal questions and answers, there were speakers from the audience advocating for the airport, airplanes and skydiving. These people really missed the point, as both sides agree that they like the airport, airplanes and skydiving.
The only complaint is the annoying, whining sound of one of their airplanes that wasn’t there until two years ago, when something changed. There was no noise complaint until two years ago.
About two hours into the meeting when (thanks to Ms.Colvard and Ms. Dilly) there was finally some progress on getting specific answers about the propellers and engines, the audience was told they were straying and to stay on point and were steered in another direction. The conclusion drawn was that the city has almost no legal control over the situation.
However, if the city were motivated to create a win-win situation, they could try the conflict resolution process of Marshall Rosenberg, Ph.D., which uses compassionate communication. There is a solution if NorCal would just consider going back to what they were using two years ago. I think we all want NorCal to have a successful business, but just not at the expense of our peace. There are other ways than legal to solve issues!

Fun on Thursdays

I’m sorry Mary Stuart misunderstood my letter. Here’s the point:
Nobody’s trying to stick a pin in Friday Night Live or the jumpy house. The music, market and jumpy house would be just as much fun on Thursday nights, and wouldn’t kick our local restaurants and movie house in the shins. Many working people socialize on Thursday nights. They just don’t drink as much.
Also, I strongly disagree with the assertion that two of the “major occupational hazards” of small towns like Cloverdale are monotony and boredom.
Cloverdale is many things, but never boring.

Dinner of Talents set for April 26

On May 3, 2015, the Kiwanis Family will be holding a Dinner of Talents to raise money for the “Eliminate” cause. For those of you that are not sure what the Eliminate cause is, it raises money to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus from third world countries.
Numerous babies die every day from this curable disease.  In fact, 11 babies die each minute. A series of three shots, given to the mother, will prevent her babies from getting this horrible disease that causes suffering and death. These shots only cost 60 cents each, for a total of $1.80. So the proceeds from the Dinner of Talents will go to benefit this amazing cause.
We are looking for those with an appropriate talent who can perform at the event. The entry fee is only $10 a person (which includes the participant‘s meal). For those in group performances, every person in the group must pay the $10 entry fee. The first place prize is $200; second place is $150; third place is $100. Besides a meal, every participant will receive a small token of appreciation for entering.
Not only is this for a great cause, not only do entrants receive some pretty fabulous awards, but this a great opportunity for the community to get together and have fun. What better place to come together as the small town we are, than to join us at this Dinner of Talents?  It will be a fun night watching the amazing talents and eating a fabulous, Kiwanis–prepared dinner.
All those who are interested in being a part of the talent show must call (707) 894-5467 and ask that a talent contest application be mailed to them. Auditions are required. These will occur on April 26, 2015 at 5 p.m. at the Cloverdale High School East Gym.  (If equipment is too heavy to transport, or other conditions apply which would make it difficult to attend the audition, video auditions will be accepted.) For those who just wish to eat dinner and enjoy the show, prices at the door will be $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and $5 for children 12 and under. Pre-sale tickets will be $2 less for each; and will be available from Kiwanis members, CHS Key Clubbers and Washington School Builders Clubbers. The location of the Dinner of Talents will be Cloverdale High School East Gym from 5 to 8:30 p.m.  We hope to see a lot of our community there.
